Presentation of the 2012 edition
"PhDs as innovation catalysts for the industry"
Following the positive experiences in 2009 and 2010, the third edition of the Forum on Ph.D. Research in Information and Communication Technologies was celebrated on October 15th, 2012. This year it extended its scope to the whole ICT area in UPC and was jointly organized by the Departments of Electronic Engineering, Signal Theory and Communication, Computer Architecture, Telematics Engineering, and Software.
This Forum aims to be a showcase for the research activity developed by research groups in the ICT area, as well as a contact point for PhD students and private companies. The Forum is thus particularly addressed to these actors, although registration is open to anybody interested.
This edition had as a main theme “PhDs as innovation catalysts for the industry”. The Forum started with a keynote speech by Xavier Marichal, (PhD, entrepreneur, consultant, co-founder of Alterface Inc.). Next a panel of representatives from local companies ( , , ...) debated about how the industry benefits from the innovation created by PhDs, and the valorization of thesis works and PhD formation by companies. After the panel, a selection of doctoral candidates ed the essential of their research work, while other thesis were presented in poster format. This poster session extended to the afternoon, where the vice-dean of research of UPC addressed some words about the need and opportunities of PhDs in collaboration with firms. The day closed with an interesting meeting with entrepreneurs from known start-ups (Miraveo, Baolab, Urbiotica, Nova-Ventus) and larger companies (CA Labs) who explained their experiences on starting a spin-off company, and discussed about innovation opportunities within the ICT industry.
